The Moon is our only natural satellite and the fith largest moon in our Solar System.  It is thought to have formed some 4.5 billion years ago with several hypotheses about its origin.  The most widely accepted explantion seems to be that our moon was formed from debris after an impact between Earth and a Mars sized body.

The Soviet Union was the first to visit our neighbour with an unmanned spacecraft in 1959.  This was followed by manned missions of the American Apollo Program.  Neil Armstrong of Apollo 11 was the  first to set foot on the Moon  in July 1969.
