The Swan Nebula -also known as Omega nebula was discovered by Philippe Loys de Cheseaux in 1745 and lies in the constellation of Sagittaris. It looks like a fuzzy patch in binoculars. In this early image one can just see the dark clouds called "Bok Globules" - clouds of protostellar material!
This is a massive star forming region and spans some 15 light years across.
Distance: 5,500 light years.
